I forgot to mention in my last email my own feeble attempts at  
building a "generic" 3D browser.
I needed something like this for my SeVEn framework, so I did a proof- 
of-concept implementation based on Java3D. While this is tied in with  
the framework, the architecture is generic and maybe useful in some  
way to the current VOS browser discussions. Find the documentation here:
